Certification is the highest level of evaluation by The Florida Bar of the competency and experience of attorneys in the areas of law approved for certification.  It recognizes an attorney’s special knowledge, skills and proficiency in a specific area of law, as well as professionalism and ethics in practice.  Only six percent of eligible members are board certified in one or more of 24 certification areas.

Board certified lawyers’ experience and competency have been rigorously evaluated, and they are the only Florida lawyers allowed to refer to themselves as “specialists” or “experts” or to use the letters B.C.S. to indicate Board Certified Specialist when referring to their legal credentials.

Minimum requirements for certification include at least five years in law practice; a satisfactory showing of substantial involvement in the field for which certification is sought; a passing grade on the required examination; a satisfactory peer review assessment of competence in the specialty as well as character, ethics and professionalism in the practice of law; and satisfaction of the certification area’s continuing legal education requirements.
